Search Mercer County Court Records

Mercer County court records are kept by the New Jersey Judiciary and the Mercer Vicinage in Trenton. You can search for Mercer County court records online through the state's free case databases, or request copies of files that are not posted. Civil, criminal, family, and probate matters each sit with a different division, so the right tool depends on the case type. A Mercer County court records search starts with the New Jersey Courts case portals and, for closed files, a formal records request. Local traffic and ordinance cases are handled by municipal court instead of the Superior Court.

How to Search Mercer County Court Records

The New Jersey Courts "Find a Case" page is the front door. It is not one combined docket. It links separate databases by record type, and you pick the one that fits. Civil and foreclosure case jackets search by party name or docket number. Criminal cases search by name or county. Criminal judgments search by defendant name, SBI number, complaint number, or indictment number. Mercer is Vicinage 7, so select Mercer when a portal offers a county filter.

Before you start, gather what you have. A docket number gives the cleanest result. A full party name works if you do not have the number. For a business, use the legal name and trim extra words if the first try fails.

  1. Open the Find a Case page and choose the database that matches your case type.
  2. For civil and foreclosure, open the eCourts Civil Case Jacket public access portal and accept the disclaimer.
  3. Pick the court or division and select Mercer, or enter a Mercer docket number.
  4. Search by docket number when you have it, or by last and first name.
  5. Open the case jacket to read the docket entries and file a records request for any document not shown.

You can reach the civil tool through the eCourts Civil Case Jacket public access portal, and the full menu through the NJ Courts Find a Case page.

A case jacket pulls together the key facts of a case. The exact fields shift by division, but the core set holds across Mercer files. This is what you can expect to read in a typical public civil case jacket.

Types of Mercer County Court Records

Mercer court records span many case types. Each comes from a different division or local court. Most are open to the public, but family and juvenile files carry strict limits. The municipal records are handled town by town.

The New Jersey Courts municipal page explains how local cases connect to the wider system, as shown in the NJ Courts municipal court overview.

Mercer County court records municipal court overview on NJ Courts

That overview ties municipal traffic and ordinance matters back to the statewide Judiciary. The main record types below cover what most people search for.

  • Civil records - complaints, motions, orders, and judgments in the Law Division.
  • Special Civil and small claims - lower-dollar disputes and landlord-tenant cases.
  • Criminal records - complaints, indictments, plea forms, and judgments of conviction.
  • Family records - divorce, custody, child support, and domestic violence matters.
  • Foreclosure and judgment liens - filed with the Superior Court Clerk's Office.

Requesting Copies of Mercer County Court Records

When a document is not posted online, you request a copy from the Judiciary. The tool is the Records Request Form CN 10200, submitted through JEDS or to the Superior Court Clerk's Office for closed and archived files. Choose the right processing division so the request reaches the office that holds the file. Closed civil, criminal, divorce, family, and foreclosure records often route to the Superior Court Clerk's Office.

Copy / AuthenticationFee
Plain letter-size page$0.05
Plain legal-size page$0.07
Certified copy$15
Seal of the Court$10
Exemplified copy plus page fees$50

The full process and form are on the NJ Courts copies of court records page. Checks and money orders are payable to Treasurer, State of New Jersey, and cash is taken in person only. Credit card payment is available for certified, exemplified, and sealed copies in the electronic process. A certificate of statewide judgment lien is $10, a certificate of divorce is $10, and a triple exemplified copy runs $60. Tell the office which copy type you need up front, because the page fee is added to the certification fee and the total depends on the document length.

Pick the processing division with care. The form lists the Appellate Division Clerk's Office, the Supreme Court Clerk's Office, Municipal Court, the Superior Court Clerk's Office, and the Tax Court Clerk's Office among the choices. A request routed to the wrong office is slower, since it has to be forwarded. For most closed Mercer trial files, the Superior Court Clerk's Office is the right pick.

Public Access Framework for Mercer County Court Records

Court records in New Jersey follow court rules, not the Open Public Records Act. Rule 1:38 sets the default that court records are open for inspection, then lists what is excluded. That includes adoption, many juvenile and family matters, sealed filings, and confidential personal identifiers. The NJ Courts copies page says civil, special civil, criminal, family, municipal, and Tax Court records are open except as Rule 1:38 carves out.

Who can request depends on the record. Most civil and criminal files are open to anyone. Divorce documents go only to a party or attorney of record, with valid ID. Anyone else needs a court order.

Note: Do not file a county OPRA request for a Superior Court case file; use the New Jersey Courts records request process instead.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Mercer County

Some Mercer court records are closed to the public. Adoption files are sealed under Rule 1:38-3(16) and state law, and need a Family Part judge's order to view. Juvenile charges are confidential. Expunged records are isolated from ordinary public access under the expungement law. Mental health and commitment records, grand jury materials, and many domestic violence details are also restricted.

To view a sealed record, you file a motion and obtain a judge's order. Personal identifiers such as Social Security numbers are redacted from public filings under Rule 1:38-7, so a public copy may show blanks where private data was removed. Grand jury materials stay closed, and law enforcement investigatory records can be withheld under exemptions, especially while a matter is open. Name-change files are generally civil records, but confidential details inside them may still be screened.

If you believe a record should be open and you were denied, the path depends on who holds it. For a Judiciary file, you raise the issue through the court. For a county agency record under OPRA, you can seek review by the Government Records Council or the Superior Court. The two tracks do not overlap, so match the challenge to the office that controls the record.
